When I took my first teacher training, I had no intention of becoming a Kundalini Yoga teacher. It was an advanced training course that all were allowed to attend, The Parapsychology of Moving Thought Forms. I wanted to learn face-reading and deepen my practice of tratak meditations to find new ways to use Kundalini techniques to write poetry.

I was already writing The Poet using some tratak meditations that Guru Jagat had recommended to me and had learned how to “download” poetry from elsewhere. This fit nicely with my long-time interest in automatic writing, telepathic poetics, sonic improvisation, and various methods of divination as mediums of creativity. I also spent many years in a spiritual community where I had taken on leadership roles. The goal was not to take on another responsibility.

Then I did the training and woah. On the last day, during the last meditation, I received the most incredible transmission. It was like being caught on fire by a blue, powerful light. My radiance was huge—simultaneously, something lifted, and I was gifted with a whole new reality of happiness, bounty, and energy. My bro Atma Santokh insisted that I start teaching, and so I did.

åI let folks know that I was teaching in the park at first. Then, eventually, Ariana Reines, also a student of Guru Jagat, allowed me to begin teaching a class before her Saturday Morning Invisible College classes. I would wake up at 3:30, learn the yoga set, go to my office at NAU in the snow, and teach from my office to not wake up my graduate school roommate. Since that day, I have never had a class where no one has shown up. There have been a few with one person, but I’ve kept up and “been kept up.” The next year, I started UBU. A friend with branding expertise recommended that I come up with a catchy name and I told him about a teaching. He recommended BU or UBU, as an acronym for You Be You. It resonated and I went with it.

Just to be clear, I am going a little out of sequence with this story. After Guru Jagat left the planet, I started working privately with Harmanjot Kaur. It was a sad time, but I was determined to continue my practice and was dedicated to doing what I could to sharing what I had learned from the legacy of Guru Jagat. Harmanjot’s presence was exactly what I needed and I trusted my gut instinct to reach out to her. In my first session, she recommended two things: 1000 days of Sadorshan Chakra Kriya and that as a poet, I become like Moses. I am into disciplined meditations regimens so Sadorshan Chakra Kriya was a welcome challenge but Moses?

TBH, I just didn't understand the imperative and was a little irritated because, on some level, I knew that she had changed my plans to continue as an avant-garde, rebellious poet. She told me to unite my teacher-ship with my poetry—to become an illuminated being not only in my practice but in my creativity and to be "a lite delight." You have to understand that I was an old-school avant-garde, black shirt-wearing, skeptical, politically radical intellectual. A light delight was not in the cards for me in this timeline. That has been the actual work for me. In my meditation practice and all aspects of my being, I had to find myself, my authentic self, my light, spiritual, and illuminated self. She wanted me to bring that part out to the world, and frankly, I was terrified in this cancel-culture environment. It was a big deal for me to start posting about my classes online and showing people who I was. To be clear, I lost friends, and people misunderstood. People in my tribe turned on me; people in academia often still think I'm a quack. IDGAF because my connection to the lineage and to the almighty is solid. This is me. I am relaxed. I am confident, and I love myself because I love the Divine. I can see the Divine in me, and in turn, I can also see the Divine in others.

The universe can feel it when you are relaxed and just being you. It brings you what you need and more because the trajectory between you and your will is clear. This is UBU's mission and destiny: to help you be you so that all the good things come to you and are given back to all from you.

On most Saturdays, I’ll be giving prosperity teachings at 9 am Central. You can join by registering through my Patreon. It isn’t hard to have an abundant life or a happy life or to just do what you came here to do. You just have to be you, to surrender, and to let things come to you.

Abundance doesn’t have to mean that you drive a Mercedes or live in a McMansion, but it can. It can mean having a cozy life, being comfortable in your skin, eating healthy food, and having love around you. It can mean whatever it means to you, and when you are being you, you are comfortable with your definition of abundance. You are grateful and kind, and Mother Nature rains down her gifts for you. You can see the future, and the future can see you, too.

Join me this Saturday to relax into being you.

Below is some poetry that I’d love to share with you. Consider supporting this publication and my destiny to write and teach spiritual poetry and the teachings of Kundalini Yoga.
